South Africa's packaging challenge
South Africa still sends a significant amount of waste to landfill, and packaging plays a major role in that. Stats SA has reported that only a small portion of general waste is currently recycled, with most ending up in landfills.
But there is also real progress. South Africa has an active recycling economy, supported by recyclers, small businesses and informal waste collectors who form a critical part of the local chain.
PETCO reported that its 2024 support enabled recycling partners to purchase around R470 million in post-consumer packaging materials from small businesses — allowing real value to flow back into local communities.
